Recently I was asked what a ‘good fat vs. bad fat’ was. I was not satisfied on how I answered it on the spot, so I have been ruminating in the topic over the last couple weeks. Here’s the very SHORT but important message about fat.

.

Good dietary fats: Think WHOLE food source. Examples:

Avocado (avocado oil)

Fatty Fish (fish oils)

Nuts

Seeds

Olive Oil

Whole Eggs

Try and avoid skim, or ‘light’ products. Chances are there is just more sugar added to the product and it is processed.

.

Bad fats: Think processed and highly sprayed GMO crops

Margarine

Canola oil

Vegetable shortening

Fried foods

.

Long story short, the more processed your food is the worse it is for you. Processed food means that it has been altered some way during preparation. Try to go more natural, whole food, organic. The health benefits are endless.

.

Let’s talk fat!

Let’s talk fat!

Remember that fat does not make you fat. With any major food group always consume with moderation especially if you have a low activity level. Processed sugar is the big one to avoid as well as limit all dietary sugar. When I say dietary sugar, I want you to associate it with bread, dairy products, fruit, potatoes. Not saying these are bad for you, we just tend to eat more carbohydrates (sugar) in our diet than we need to. In comparison, processed sugars are found in things including but not limited to premade snack foods, canned products, fast food, sweet drinks etc.

.

Some benefits to eating a diet rich in healthy fats and reducing sugar consumption:

  • May lower inflammation (pain, swelling, redness)
  • Can reduces risk of heart disease
  • May lowers Cholesterol
  • Aids in weight loss
  • Increases energy
  • Increases mental clarity

.

The list goes on and on. Always consult your doctor before making any dramatic change to your daily routine! Take care. Live long and have fun! XO
